R.I.S.E. was not only a program that helped me academically, but one that provided me a lot of emotional and developmental support. From finding myself and getting through tough times, I always knew I could count on the staff to be there for me. I struggled a lot keeping up with my academics and R.I.S.E. helped me to keep that in order. My counselor was constantly checking in on me and trying to find ways to help me out. He also tried to provide me with the right tools to figure it out on my own. I strongly felt that the program pushed me to want to do better for my own sake and to believe that I was more than capable of excellence. Initially, I’d say that R.I.S.E. gave me a roadmap to the start of my life, but I’ve come to realize that it gave me the strength, courage, tools and support to draw out my own roadmap. R.I.S.E. also gave me a lot of exposure to things like SAT prep courses, college tours, presentations to different career and educational options, even all the way down to tips on how to live on my own once I graduated. I am truly grateful that I was able to experience this and be a part of this beautiful program for I have no words for where I’d be without it.

I am thankful for RISE in the sense that it helped me determine I do not want to go to school in SoCal & I recieved lots of schlorship opportunities and fee waivers on behalf of being apart of this program. Hello my name is Zaira Rodriguez. Next school year I will be attending UC Berkeley and my future plan is to become a public defender. RISE has helped me manage my time, taught me to always do homework first before anything else, and led me to where I am today. My counselors always motivated me and made sure I was on track. With RISE being an after school program I spent freshman and sophomore year getting help on homework instead of being home procrastinating or being with my friends after school. I’m going to Merritt college next year, I plan on playing basketball there and start studying kiniesiology , and hopefully transfer to a 4 year after a year or 2 at Merritt, the goal is to get to cal. Rise helped me a lot actually especially when I didn’t have any time to go after school due to basketball.
